Work Related Stress

Work Related Stress and Anxiety are very common

What happens around us affects us, and can cause stress and anxiety. It is often thought that stress is always a bad thing but this isn’t true. You learn from new experiences even when they’re a challenge. They can help you to develop, even when things are a challenge. But if events in your personal life or at work make you feel overwhelmed, then you “suffer from stress”.

Everyone’s response to stress at work is different. You may find that the adrenalin produced by the body during stressful episodes gives you energy. It can make you feel driven to achieve more. Or you may find that stress causes you unpleasant physical sensations and negative thought patterns. If you are finding that stress is affecting you negatively, there is so much you can do to help yourself.

It’s not what happens to you that matters, it’s how you respond

Thousands of years of psychology, philosophy and religion have taught us this. That what really matters isn’t what happens to you, but how you choose to react to what happens to you. Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy will teach you to learn to react positively and to feel in control.

Hypnosis enables you to switch on powerful feelings of relaxation in order to manage stress. You’ll learn to focus away from your anxiety. Imagine your mind has two filing cabinets. One is labelled “Can control” and the other “Can’t Control”. Hypnotherapy teaches you to let go of the things you can’t control. You learn to close and lock that cabinet. This leaves you more time and energy to think about the things you CAN control.

It’s human nature to be negative!

It’s very tempting to think about negative things. This is because you feel like we want to fix them. It’s human nature to want to solve problems. They feel like they need your attention. But often the things you feel anxious about are not things you can change, or prepare for, or control. All that worrying achieves nothing except make you feel tense and anxious.

Learn self hypnosis to help stress and anxiety

Learning, through hypnotherapy , to use relaxation for stress relief is beneficial in itself. You will learn self-hypnosis. Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation. It is clinically proven to lower your blood pressure and heart rate. ECGs show that when you’re in hypnosis you react less to things you’d usually find threatening. In addition, suggestions made in hypnotherapy are used to help you deal with specific instances of stress at work.

Physical effects of stress

The short term effects of anxiety include upset stomach, constantly feeling exhausted, headaches and migraines, and difficulty sleeping. Loss of appetite, increased consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and drugs, are common. Sometimes you find you need the loo more often. You might suffer with aching muscles (especially back, neck and shoulders). You can also notice palpitations, dry mouth, sweating and feeling physically sick. Longer term problems include an increased likelihood of heart problems, cancers and strokes. This is thought to be due to suppression of the immune system.

Stress at work is a vicious circle

To add to this unhappy list, stress at work is worsened because you can’t concentrate. Your feelings of disinterest mean you’re unable to do your job properly. This in turn makes you worry about errors, which means your workrate slows. This adds to the feelings of stress, anxiety and worry. When you suffer stress at work, this can have a knock-on effect on those working with you, causing others to experience stress.

Learning techniques for stress management, whilst in hypnosis, significantly lessens both short and long term risks.

How can hypnosis help?

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy uses a number of techniques to overcome stress in the workplace. These include visualisation of potentially stressful situations whilst you are in a very relaxed state. This is the same technique which is used for curing phobias. Your mind then becomes conditioned. You can now associate the formerly stressful situation with a calm mind, and a feeling of being able to cope.

Breathing and relaxation techniques can also be taught, together with forms of “thought stopping’. This is a method of training yourself to STOP negative thoughts as soon as they’ve begun. Negative thoughts could be for example “I’ve got far too much to do”; ‘I’m going to miss the deadline”; “I can’t cope”; “I’m going to lose my job” .

You will also be taught to recognise the early symptoms of stress and anxiety, and given ways of learning to react more positively to those events which are affecting you. Self hypnosis can be taught to enable you to reinforce your new thinking patterns.

Assertiveness Training

One thing which can cause stress is your inability to say no. You worry what people will think of you if you say you can’t stay late, or can’t take on any extra work. You feel anxious about talking to the person who isn’t pulling their weight, but is giving you more and more to do. Perhaps the demands being made on you are unreasonable, but you don’t know how to deal with this.

Assertiveness is about the ability to stick up for yourself. You’ll learn to say what you think, to say no, to respond to criticism, and to express your own opinions. And you’ll do this without anxiety, embarrassment, shyness or self consciousness. The therapists at Manchester Hypnotherapy are all experienced in assertiveness training. They will help you to use assertiveness to manage your workload and your relationships at work.
